In November 2023, Port Houston processed approximately 3.5 million TEUs, marking a 5% decrease from the previous year’s record. While exports for the month dipped by 2%, the overall export performance for 2023 surged by 9%, reaching 1,268,034 TEUs. The export demand in Houston is largely driven by the production of resins and petrochemicals.
Conversely, imports displayed a decline with 137,631 TEUs in November, a 16% drop for the month. Notable was the arrival of the CMA CGM Lisa Marie, one of the largest vessels at Port Houston’s Bayport Container Terminal, handled efficiently in less than two days.
Roger Guenther, the executive director at Port Houston, emphasized the facility’s readiness for future growth. Texas, recognized for its business-friendly environment, especially benefits from the economic value generated by the Houston Ship Channel, supporting millions of jobs and contributing significantly to the state and national economies.
However, Port Houston has witnessed declines in general cargo by 20%, primarily due to drops in coal, grain, and plywood. Steel volumes also dipped by 13%. In contrast, auto imports saw a notable 67% increase compared to 2022. Overall, the total tonnage at Port Houston decreased by 9% through November, standing at 46,196,305 short tons.
