During a presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Bosch highlighted its focus on hydrogen as a sustainable alternative for meeting future climate-neutral energy needs. The company is heavily investing in hydrogen technologies, with a particular emphasis on hydrogen fuel cell powertrains for heavier vehicles. Bosch entered volume production of its mobile fuel cells in Germany last summer and has secured orders from truck manufacturers in Europe, the U.S., and China. The company projected that by 2030, one in five new trucks weighing six tons or more will have a fuel cell powertrain. In addition to fuel cells, Bosch is also developing a hydrogen combustion engine suitable for commercial vehicles, such as heavy-duty longhaul trucks and construction machines. The company aims for the hydrogen used in its engines to be practically carbon-neutral when produced using sustainable energy sources. Bosch’s commitment to hydrogen aligns with initiatives like the U.S. government’s $7 billion investment in hydrogen hubs, which are seen as crucial for establishing hydrogen fueling infrastructure. Despite the emphasis on hydrogen, Bosch reiterated its commitment to battery-electric vehicles and is set to produce silicon carbide chips that promise to increase the range of electric cars and reduce energy losses at a new facility in Roseville, Calif. The company stressed the importance of focusing on feasible and affordable solutions to end reliance on fossil fuels.
