Red Sea Threats on Vessels Expected to Lead to Major Container Shortage

DECEMBER 25, 2023

Following multiple Houthi attacks on commercial liners since mid-December, more carriers are choosing to divert ships around the Horn of Africa, leading to added travel time for cargo ships and pushing rates higher. This risk comes at a perilous time as the traditional only other major route available would involve the Panama Canal, which is already experiencing a historic drought. And now, the delays caused by the rerouting and some concerns over ship’s knowingly deactivating their AIS transponders to avoid attacks have led Lars Jensen of Vespucci Maritime, to note that containership traffic will lead to a shortage of approximately 1.8 million TEUs. This means that now is the time to get EXTRA strategic in planning drayage and street turn containers. PRIMO can help achieve those goals with our comprehensive network and visibility-driven technology and processes.

West Coast Wonders: Navigating Record Growth in Container Volume

December 29, 2023

San Pedro Bay ports have reported a significant increase in container volumes, with the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach experiencing substantial year-over-year growth. This surge, driven by rising consumer demand and online shopping, highlights the critical role of efficient cargo movement in Transpacific trade. Further, higher-than-expected demand in the area will lead to a run on available drayage trucking, creating congestion at port terminals, and resulting in bottlenecks and higher rates for the area.  PRIMO’s drayage and open spot availability services are perfectly poised to manage these growing demands, offering shippers reliable and agile solutions in this bustling trade gateway.
