Trucking Rates Fluctuate as Seasonal Demands Shift

The DAT Truckload Volume Index (TVI) for van, refrigerated, and flatbed loads increased modestly compared to February. Volumes typically rise from February to March, with the latter having two more shipping days this year. Despite the increase in volumes, rates varied across equipment types. The van rate averaged $2.01 per mile, down 6 cents from February and 15 cents lower year over year. The reefer rate fell 8 cents to $2.35 a mile, also down 15 cents year over year. However, the flatbed rate rose 1 cent to $2.50 a mile, down 21 cents year over year.

DAT iQ benchmark contract rates for van and reefer loads dipped slightly, while the flatbed rate saw a small increase. The margin between spot and contract rates widened for all three equipment types, indicating increased pricing power for motor carriers.
