Mexico Surpasses China as the Biggest Trading Partner of the US, Heralds More Nearshoring Activity

  1. Mexico emerged as the top U.S. trading partner in 2023, with trade totaling $798 billion, fueled by exports of fuels and imports of passenger vehicles.
  2. Canada ranked second with $773.94 billion in trade, while China ranked third with $575.03 billion.
  3. Laredo, Texas, became the leading U.S. trade gateway, with $320 billion in total trade, mostly with Mexico.
  4. Nearshoring in Mexico, driven by growing manufacturing, has surged due to strained U.S.-China trade relations.
  5. This marks the second time Mexico has been the top U.S. trading partner, the first being in 2019.
  6. Top imports from Mexico included passenger vehicles and auto parts, while top exports from the U.S. included fuels and auto parts.
