A new partnership between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has been established, releasing $9.4 million in grants to advance future biofuel technologies. The agreement, announced on February 22, tasks the DOE with overseeing research and development of next-generation biofuels, aligning with the EPA’s Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program. These biofuels are derived from renewable biological sources such as plants and algae. The funding aims to support projects that enhance biofuel production efficiency and reduce costs, accelerating their transition to commercial-scale production. The EPA’s RFS program mandates specific annual amounts of renewable fuels to replace or reduce petroleum-based transportation fuels. Projects funded through the DOE’s Bioenergy Technologies Office will focus on scaling up key process steps in advanced biofuel production and developing technology innovations for processing biointermediates. Eligible applicants include U.S. businesses, educational institutions, nonprofits, and government entities, with submissions due by March 22 and grant recipients to be announced by July 25.
