Digital freight network Convoy Inc. has announced its closure due to insurmountable challenges. CEO Dan Lewis conveyed this decision to employees on October 19, marking the end of Convoy’s core business operations. The company had been actively exploring strategic options for several months, but none materialized to sustain its existing form.

This move comes as Convoy Inc. faced a challenging freight recession and capital market contraction. The adverse market conditions made it exceedingly difficult to secure a logical strategic buyer and stifled investment in late-stage private companies. Mergers and acquisitions within the industry had significantly declined, further complicating their situation.

Despite the company’s innovative tech-centric approach to trucking, the confluence of market forces proved too formidable to overcome. Dan Lewis acknowledged the dedication of Convoy’s employees and their efforts in implementing cost-cutting measures. He expressed a belief that modernizing the freight industry remains essential for the future.

Convoy, founded in 2015, aimed to connect shippers and carriers through software. Over the years, it gained recognition and backing from prominent investors like Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos. Nevertheless, the company had to halt new orders before eventually ceasing operations, with only a select few employees remaining to assist in the wind-down process.
